10 Things Originate from Canada
Canada Dry
If you think there’s a better mass-market ginger ale, you’re wrong.
Will Arnett
“It’s the final countdown!”
Poutine
What’s not to love about this greasy, hot, smothered mass of
French fries, gravy and cheese curds? (The Sycamore is currently dishing
up a more refined version of the dish, fwiw.)
The Band
The Band-mates might’ve looked like off-duty Civil War
re-enactors on the cover of their eponymous sophomore album, from 1969,
but four of the group’s primary members, including Rick Danko, Garth
Hudson, Richard Manuel and Robbie Robertson have roots in Canada. The
lone holdout? Drummer and singer extraordinaire Levon Helm, who was born
in Turkey Scratch, Arkansas.
Peanut butter
PB&J might be a lunchtime staple in elementary schools
across the States, but the spread was actually patented by
Montreal-based chemist Marcellus Edson in 1884.
Neil Young (The Monsanto Years excepted)
Neil Young is a music legend with a nearly unassailable discography (my personal fave: Tonight’s the Night, from 1975), but, man, Young’s activist urges can’t make up for the lack of worthwhile tunes on last year’s The Monsanto Years.
Rick Moranis
The gawky comic-actor could’ve landed on this list for his
early work on “SCTV” alone, but a filmography filled with modern
classics like “Strange Brew,” “Ghostbusters” and “Spaceballs” certainly
doesn’t hurt.
Neil Peart’s in-concert drum solo on “Working Man”
Sure, we could’ve just slotted Rush on this list, but why not
highlight a track that evolved into a live showcase for Peart’s precise,
powerful and uniquely dexterous drum skills?
Trivial Pursuit
This board game is a holiday staple with my family — even
surviving the year my uncle flipped the board across the room and
accused the kids of cheating. I think I was 13 at the time.
Phil Hartman
Trumps even Darrell Hammond in the “Saturday Night Live”
rankings of sneaky-good glue guys. Plus he provided the voice of the
great Troy McClure on “The Simpsons,” who you might recognize from such
films as…
