Today at noon, at Victoria Square in Athens, a car stopped outside the entrance of an apartment building. This very old lady, 92 years old, walking with a cane got out of the car. The driver, probably her daughter, opened the trunk of the car for her and helped her get some bags out. You would think this old lady was a resident of the area and just came home from a Sunday drive with her children and she did some groceries for herself from her little pension. Turns out it was more than that.
The bags were filled with sandwiches, cakes, poached eggs, bottles of water and other snacks and necessities. And it wasn't for herself. Victoria Square is a square where a lot of refugees gather, especially now that many are stranded because of the border closings. The old lady handed the bags to the volunteers who were preparing food at the time for the refugees. After handing it to them to be distributed to the refugees, she quietly left.
This is Greece. Despite all the destitution, difficulties and the fact that it has been ravaged by the European economic crisis and the EU's policies, this is how people respond to humanitarian crisis. People try to help each other here, no matter where a person is from.
