California Gold Rush 1849

The spot where Marshall first discovered the gold that started the California Gold Rush.   John Sutter’s sawmill in 1850. The historians at Marshall Gold State Historic Park concluded the person seen in the above photo was  the photographer’s assistant who was used to show scale.   James Marshall’s cabin in Coloma, California.   James Marshall Monument On this day in 1848, James Wilson Marshall  (October 8, 1810 – August 10, 1885) found  a gold nugget at Sutter’s Mill in northern  California . The discovery led to the gold  rush of ’49’.

First Super Bowl NFL-AFL

The first  National Football League  (NFL) Super Bowl was played on  this day in 1967. The Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City  Chiefs of the American Football League. The final score was 35-10. Even though ticket prices averaged just $12, it was the only Super Bowl that  didn’t sell out. The game aired on two different networks, NBC and CBS and  drew in an audience of more than 61,000 fans. Grace Kelly

Possesion of Alaska 10-18-1867

On this day in 1867, the U.S. formally takes possession of  Alaska   after purchasing the territory from Russia for $7.2 million, or less  than two cents an acre. The Alaska purchase comprised 586,412  square miles, about twice the size of  Texas ,  and was championed  by William Henry Seward, the secretary of state under the 17th  President of the United States  Andrew Johnson .   William Henry Seward  (May 16, 1801 – October 10, 1872)   Andrew Johnson  (December 29, 1808 – July 31, 1875)
